What to know
The Centre for Intelligent Machines (CIM) has operated since 1985. It was set up as a joint group of three units: electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science. Its main topics are robotics, AI, computer vision, medical imaging and reinforcement learning. Source
The new Mila was launched in 2017 by the Université de Montréal and McGill University, with support from HEC Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal. In 2019 the institute's faculty and research team included six AI researchers from McGill, among them Doina Precup and Joelle Pineau. Source
In December 2018 CIFAR named the first 29 Canada CIFAR AI Chairs, and six of them were from McGill. Their work covers robotics, dialogue systems, the life sciences and medical imaging. Source
The first internet search engine was built at the McGill School of Computer Science in 1987 by McGill graduate Alan Emtage. Today the school's bachelor's topics include AI, robotics and computer vision. Source
Admission for international students
The admissions office has a separate section for international applicants covering costs, International Student Services and English requirements. The university teaches in English, so unless you qualify for an exemption, such as four years of study in an English-speaking country, you need a language test like the TOEFL or IELTS. For the on-campus master's in analytics with a summer 2027 intake, the first round accepts applications until November 15, 2026. Source
