What to know

Professor Tang Xiaoou founded the Multimedia Laboratory (MMLab) in July 2001. Its paper won the best paper award at CVPR 2009, the first time a team from Asia had done so, and today the lab runs the open-source OpenMMLab toolkit project. Source

The Faculty of Engineering has 30 IEEE Fellows and 4 ACM Fellows. AI and machine learning research belongs to Information Technology and Automation, one of the university's four strategic areas. Source

The bachelor's program in Artificial Intelligence: Systems and Technologies offers four specializations: biomedical intelligence, multimedia processing, large-scale AI, and intelligent manufacturing with robotics. Source

The new robotics bachelor's program in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering focuses on robot learning and embodied intelligence, with dedicated courses on both topics. Source

Admission for international students

The CUHK Graduate School handles master's and PhD admissions. You need a degree taught in English, or a TOEFL score of 79 or higher, or IELTS 6.5 or higher. Admission to the AI master's for 2027-28 runs in four rounds, from October 2, 2026 to February 28, 2027.
